How to Pick the Perfect Irish Cheeseboard

There are few things more enjoyable than a well-made Irish cheeseboard. Whether you’re entertaining guests, marking a special occasion, or simply treating yourself to something good, a thoughtful cheeseboard brings flavour, conversation, and a true sense of occasion.

At Indie Füde, we work with some of the best Irish artisan cheesemakers across the island. Over the years, we’ve helped hundreds of customers build cheeseboards for birthdays, weddings, corporate events, and quiet nights in. If you’re not sure where to start, our teams in Comber and Belfast are always happy to help. From taste pairings to storage tips – just ask. We love talking cheese.

Here are our go-to tips for picking the perfect board.

Choose a range of styles and strengths

A great cheeseboard always offers contrast. Include at least one soft and creamy cheese, something bold like a blue, and a firm aged cheese for depth and texture. For larger gatherings, aim for three to five different varieties to give your guests a bit of everything.

If you’re building a smaller board, focus on balance. One bold cheese, one mellow, and one in-between is a great place to start.

Irish cheese favourites to include

We’re lucky to work with some of the most talented cheesemakers in Ireland. Their work is all about small-batch production, seasonal flavour, and traditional techniques.

Here are a few standout cheeses from our shelves that work beautifully on any board:

  • Young Buck – An award-winning Northern Irish blue, bold and balanced
  • Coolattin Vintage Cheddar – Expertly aged Irish cheddar, with rich flavour and full body
  • Drumlin Garlic – Semi-hard, bright wild garlic joins the delicious raw cows milk base cheese
  • Killeen Goat Gouda – Rich, nutty, and sweet. Made with goat’s milk in County Galway

Not sure which to go for? Just pop into the shop – our team will talk you through the options and help you build a board around your favourites. Theres always plenty of tasting to be done too!

Add the right accompaniments

A cheeseboard is more than just cheese. The extras help elevate the flavours and create a more interesting spread. You don’t need to overcomplicate it — just think about contrast.

Pair bold cheeses with sweet chutneys, or smooth cheeses with something crunchy. Some of our most popular accompaniments include:

  • Fig or apple chutney
  • Local honey
  • Pickled onions or gherkins
  • Walnuts, almonds, or fresh grapes
  • Sourdough crackers or seeded oatcakes

Our Comber and Belfast shops are fully stocked with chutneys, crackers, and seasonal extras – and we’re always happy to help you match flavours. We even run a selection of excellent events that introduce you to some pairings.

Presentation makes a difference

A few small steps can make your Irish cheeseboard feel extra special. Start by letting your cheeses come to room temperature before serving. This brings out their full flavour and softens the texture for easier slicing.

Lay out the cheeses first, spacing them across the board, then fill in the gaps with your accompaniments. Use small bowls for anything sticky or wet, and keep things rustic and generous. Cheese is about enjoyment, not precision.

If you’re serving guests, consider adding small handwritten labels to help everyone identify the cheeses. This will save you repeating yourself over and over – or even having to remember after a glass or two of wine!

Tell a local story

When you build a cheeseboard with products from Indie Füde, you’re not just offering flavour. You’re sharing the work of real producers. Each cheese in our collection has a story. It was made by hand, aged with care, and delivered to us by people we know and trust.

Whether you’re gifting a hamper, building a board for your family, or planning a special event, a well-chosen Irish cheeseboard celebrates quality, community, and real food.
